Support Moms to Support Children

In a recent study, Child Trends found that children have improved outcomes when mothers (of all economic levels) receive emotional support. Examining data from a 2007 national telephone survey, Child Trends learned that moms reported more favorable outcomes for their children—improved social competence and engagement in school, with fewer internalizing behaviors such as depression—when the women received emotional support during child-rearing. The findings build a case for addressing mothers’ emotional well-being as a way to prevent negative outcomes for children.
