Let My Children Play

This is an article from the NAEYC Affiliate Connections newsletter:

Laurel Bongiorno, an Affiliate leader in Vermont, was recently featured on CNN’s education blog Schools of Thought. Her research led to her opinion piece “My View: Let preschoolers, kindergarteners play to learn.”

Laurel just completed her doctoral dissertation, which focused on preschool parents’ perceptions of their children’s learning through play. She conducted 24 in-depth interviews with parents of nine children enrolled in NAEY-Accredited early childhood programs in the New England area.

Her analysis of the data led to a question of this group of parents’ confidence in their beliefs about learning through play when the setting changed from home to school. Laurel added that “the ideas from the CNN article are those of a call to action nature.”
