Protecting Children From Obesity

Parents and home visitors work hard to protect children from danger. We are careful to transport them in car seats, cover electrical outlets and slather them in sunscreen before they go outside. However, have you ever thought about the danger of a child being at an unhealthy weight?

We use the word danger because when a child’s weight is too high for their length or height, it increases the risk of diabetes, cancer, arthritis, joint problems, dementia and more. The economic impact is staggering as well. Obesity-related healthcare costs the nation $147 billion annually. For children, obesity rates are approximately 17%.
How can you protect the children you serve from this danger? Strong Families AZhas several upcoming training opportunities to help you work with by providing the tools for children to eat well and be active. These will not only help children learn healthy habits early, but the families you serve will benefit as well.
Empower Home Visiting reviews current recommendations and best practices to promote healthy eating and active living. This 3-day training series will provide program staff with the skills and resources to support healthy eating and active living. The series will focus on both behavioral and environmental approaches.
